As we end the 2010 racing season, it’s time for base-building for many athletes. An option for many is to plan on an early season marathon or half-marathon at a warmer destination.
10 items to rememberIt’s important to remember several items when you plan for your first race of the year as part of your base-building in preparation for the remainder of the season.
Here are 10 Items to remember on for your first early season marathon:
1. Start out very slow for the first half marathon.
2. Don’t expect a Personal Record if the marathon as part of your base-building.
3. Make sure you lubricate your feet as they need to be conditioned for longer miles.
4. Lubricate area’s prone to chafing especially if your coming to a warm weather race from your colder climate.
5. If it’s a big race and you bring your family, designate a meeting place at the finish (how many times have you walked around with tired legs and body trying to find your family or friends).

‘Winter’ does not mean snow and ice everywhere…
Only four hours by plane, in Cyprus, in the most loved runner’s month, the temperature is about 20 degrees […]. Ideal for us to rest from the coldness, to get a foretaste of spring, to catch up some training or to run a marathon with fun and without any pressure […].
A better pasta party I’ve experienced anywhere. Every runner plus accompanying person is invited to come to the Kanika Pantheon Hotel. In the hotel they offered a buffet with various kind of pasta (including lasagna!), salads, fruits and desserts. On the beautiful decorated tables you can find water and vine. Honestly, if you want to have something comparable as a ‘normal’ guest, you have to pay minimum 30 Euros […]. Star of the night is Paul Tergat. The ex world record holder and first runner, who run the marathon in less than 2:05 hours in the memorable marathon in Berlin in 2003 […]. He will not run, but his attendance gives a special glamour to the Limassol Marathon.
Firstly without glamour is the Sunday morning. Start is at the old stadium GSO, directly at the coast road. It is raining, [...]

Even stronger support to the Limassol Marathon GSO 2011
The Limassol Marathon GSO, the Official National Marathon Championship of Cyprus, holds the crown as the Marathon center of the Island, and nothing will change that! The organizers, Limassol Municipality, GSO – Cyprus’ oldest Athletic Organization and OEM – the organization company, are again joining forces with all the Authorities and other prestigious private organizations in order to make this biggest athletic event more successful.
It is highly impressive that their efforts are supported by the Cyprus Tourist Organization, Cyprus Police, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health, Limassol Chamber of Commerce, the Limassol Tourist Development Company, the Technological University, Civil Defense, the Cyprus Scouts, Cyprus Athletics Organization, KOEAS and so many more.
It is worth mentioning that the much awaited proclamation of the Limassol Marathon GSO 2011, taking place on the 20th February, was recently made at a specially organized event. Honored by the presence of the Minister of Education and representatives from all the above boards and organizations, the organizers and hosts were overwhelmed by the response. The Mayor of Limassol Mr. Andreas Christou, the President of GSO Mr. Neoklis Thoma and the Director of the [...]

At an event in Limassol Tuesday of last week, the Mayor of Limassol Mr Andreas Christou, the Chairman of GSO Sports Club Mr Neocles Thoma and the Marathon Organising Director Mr Spyros Spyrou jointly announced next year’s Limassol Marathon event for the 20th February 2011. At the event, which took place in the presence of his excellency the Minister of Education Mr. Andreas Demetriou, the organizers also honoured and gave prizes to the Cypriot runners of 2010 Marathon races who had made record times in the various categories.
The organizers took the opportunity to repeat their determination and commitment to making the Limassol Marathon Cyprus’ biggest running event and one of the most popular Marathons in Europe. They also announced some changes and improvements such as moving the Start and Finish point on “Molos” pedestrian area and the inclusion of a new 5K Corporate race. With regards to participation, the organisers are optimistic to over-double the 400 figure of last event’s foreign participants.
Another dimension of the Limassol Marathon is its charity character. From last year’s event, more than 10,000 euro was collected which was delivered last week at the Announcement Event to Europa Donna Cyprus and to Make [...]

“Participation in the Limassol Marathon GSO of 28th February are developing beyond our best expectations” said in a press conference to present the events sponsors Spyros Spyrou, the Marathons Organisational Manager.
Our target for the first year to go global, which was for 500 foreign runners and as many as that from Cyprus is to be exceeded. Apart from this, the response for the charity walks is also great. 5 charity organizations are directly related to the event these being the following:
Make a Wish – an organization for children with Cancer.
Volunteer Doctors – an organization to aid people in need because of conflicts or disasters abroad.
Europa Donna Cyprus – an organization fighting breast cancer.
The Association in Support of people with Alzheimers.
Children in Need (Nicosia section).
At the press conference Spyrou took the opportunity to thank all the sponsors saying that “without the support and trust of them we could not create and grow this fascinating event for Limassol and Cyprus as a whole”. A special reference he made to the Main Sponsor, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation which was the first one to declare their support and who enabled the organisaers to move ahead.
