THE LIMASSOL MARATHON GSO 2011 WAS CONCLUDED WITH ABSOLUTE SUCCESS BOTH IN TERMS OF PARTICIPATION AS WELL AS ORGANIZATION!

The Limassol Marathon GSO 2011, was concluded with absolute success and the organizers are pleased of the successful outcome, both in terms of participation as well as organization.

The racing events were:

• Marathon
• Half Marathon
• 10K Race
• 5K Corporate Team Race

Various officials of the City and the Republic were present, among which were Members of the Parliament, the Mayor of Limassol, City Council Members, officials of the Ministry of Education and the Cyprus Tourism Organization and many more.
In charge of the whole event is Spyros Spyrou, member of the Limassol Council and Vice Chairman of Chamber of Commerce, who was extremely happy as his plans to turn the Limassol Marathon into one of the most popular Marathons in Europe are coming to fruition. he was particularly pleased about the fact that more than 1000 tourists travelled to Limassol from all over the world because of the Marathon.

The success of the Limassol Marathon was especially supported by the 500 volunteers, the Cyprus Police and Civil Defense of Cyprus.

Limassol Marathon GSO is the official marathon of our country, accredited by the international federations of AIMS and IAAF. We are particularly proud of the fact that our Marathon is a lot more than an athletic event of international standards and mass participation. It is primarily an indication of the power of the human will and soul. It is a source of values, social awareness and solidarity. It is a celebration of joy and a celebration of friendship.

Our events include a Marathon, Half Marathon, Health Race, Corporate Race, Student Race and a Charity Run / Walk. The traffic free straight, fast and flat route is ideal for all runners and participants to achieve a personal best and our slogan ‘Run along the Waves reflects the true picture.

Limassol is the second largest city of Cyprus and the capital of vitality and hospitality. Molos area on the sea front is the start and finish point, a beautiful spot which smiles back to the smile offered by the sea! Imagine the fantastic route, the great beaches, the breathtaking trails combined with the well known hospitality of our people and the mild weather.

10 items to rememberIt’s important to remember several items when you plan for your first race of the year as part of your base-building in preparation for the remainder of the season.

Here are 10 Items to remember on for your first early season marathon:

1. Start out very slow for the first half marathon.
2. Don’t expect a Personal Record if the marathon as part of your base-building.
3. Make sure you lubricate your feet as they need to be conditioned for longer miles.
4. Lubricate area’s prone to chafing especially if your coming to a warm weather race from your colder climate.
5. If it’s a big race and you bring your family, designate a meeting place at the finish (how many times have you walked around with tired legs and body trying to find your family or friends).
6. Practice a new mental training strategy for the race that you can incorporate into your summer racing season.
7. Focus on mental strength and push for a negative split in the race.
8. If it’s a destination race, pre-plan a couple fun sites to see with your family and friends (preferably after the race).
9. Don’t overeat at the Pre-Race dinner or you will feel the effects the race morning.
10. If it’s a warmer location (and you are coming from a cold climate) don’t forget to focus on electrolyte replacement (especially if it’s humid weather)

Personally, I have always enjoyed kicking off the New Year with an early season marathon in a warm location. It’s a great way to jump start the season and get the racing engine warmed up!

A better pasta party I’ve experienced anywhere. Every runner plus accompanying person is invited to come to the Kanika Pantheon Hotel. In the hotel they offered a buffet with various kind of pasta (including lasagna!), salads, fruits and desserts. On the beautiful decorated tables you can find water and vine. Honestly, if you want to have something comparable as a ‘normal’ guest, you have to pay minimum 30 Euros […]. Star of the night is Paul Tergat. The ex world record holder and first runner, who run the marathon in less than 2:05 hours in the memorable marathon in Berlin in 2003 […]. He will not run, but his attendance gives a special glamour to the Limassol Marathon.

Firstly without glamour is the Sunday morning. Start is at the old stadium GSO, directly at the coast road. It is raining, but not cold at all, approximate 14 degrees […]. ‘Can I help you?’ A volunteer has seen me, looking around helplessly. I am searching for a cloth depot […]. He says, that I could pass the bag to take care of it […].

Ten minutes before the start, only a few runners are standing at the start line. However, at 9.15 hours around 500 runners start for the different distances. I am taking pictures and have to run behind the main runner’s field […].

The rain stops. I am glad that I’ve left my rain jacket in my bag. Most of the runners are from Cyprus, but there are also many English people, some Austrian and Germans and Russians as Limassol has a huge Russian community.

On the first kilometers, Limassol shows its most beautiful side. As a modern city with noble shops, hotels, restaurants and big finance institutes. On the right hand, you have the beautiful view to the sea; sometimes disconnected because of well-kept parks or hotels […]. The street is entirely traffic free […].

I am enjoying the run, the sun and the great temperatures. I do not care that it is quit calm. I take pleasure in watching the Mediterranean Sea and the rocky coast. Sandy beaches are rare. Every 2.5 kilometers is a station for drinks. You can take water and on every second station an isotonic drink additionally.

[…] A few viewers are thinking to motivate me. But I am running consequently in my ‘feel-good-tempo’. Nobody animates me to run faster, nobody slows me down. This is the way of running I prefer; plus in this beautiful environment with the perfect weather. I feel good […].

The course raises und leads now upon the sea, which you can see above the roofs of houses. At the end of the rising there is the turning point at 12.5 km […]. The course of return to finish isn’t boring. The view and impressions are too beautiful […]. In-between, I can see strawberry and orange plantations and great views to the surrounding mountains […].

At the last stations for drinks, I refresh myself for the final spurt […]. After my injury, I have never been as fast as today. Also in the national benchmark I should be under the first […].

Summarized, there are little things to correct, but altogether there is nothing to blame. Cyprus is nice and the Limassol Marathon as well!

More than 500 people from all over the world entered our feedback competition, 60% male and 40% ages 30-39.
The results of the feedback form were very helpful and at the same time very encouraging.

The website structure is good, and the content even better. The first feeling the visitors get from the website is that the event is interesting, and indeed it is!
An important conclusion is that visitors are likely to attend this years’ event, and even more likely future Limassol Marathon Events. Reasons that make Limassol Marathon GSO attractive is the mild weather and the easy, flat race. On the other hand, were concerned about the time of the year the event takes place and the overall cost.

We would like to put their worries at rest, as the mean temperature in February is 15 – 17 c. Regarding the cost, we really have more than excellent news. As February is a month in the so called low season, both air tickets and hotels can be found at extremely good prices!
